Background of the study
Instagram has emerged as a significant platform for linguistic creativity, particularly through the medium of captions. In Nigeria, Instagram captions offer a unique space where users experiment with morphological innovation, coining new forms and modifying existing ones to express identity and creativity (Okeke, 2023). The visual nature of Instagram encourages users to complement images with inventive text, often bending traditional morphological rules to suit digital aesthetics. This study examines how morphological processes such as affixation, compounding, and reduplication are reinterpreted in the context of Instagram captions. The platform’s influence is evident as users creatively manipulate language to craft expressions that are both engaging and reflective of contemporary cultural trends (Ibrahim, 2024). By focusing on Instagram, this research aims to uncover the mechanisms behind morphological innovation and how they contribute to a dynamic digital lexicon that resonates with Nigerian audiences (Afolabi, 2023). The findings will offer insights into the broader implications of digital communication on language evolution and the interplay between technology and cultural expression.

Statement of the problem
There is limited research exploring morphological innovation in Nigerian digital media, particularly within Instagram captions. While existing studies have acknowledged the role of social media in fostering language change, few have delved into the specific morphological processes that occur in digital captions (Chinwe, 2023). This gap makes it challenging to understand how new word forms emerge and spread in online environments. The absence of systematic analysis regarding these morphological changes hinders the development of comprehensive linguistic theories that account for digital communication. This study intends to address these shortcomings by examining the morphological innovations in Instagram captions, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of language transformation in digital spaces (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze morphological innovations in Nigerian Instagram captions.
  2. To identify the processes of word formation used in digital contexts.
  3. To assess the impact of these innovations on overall language evolution in Nigeria.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant morphological innovations observed in Instagram captions?
  2. Which word formation processes are most commonly employed by Nigerian users?
  3. How do these morphological changes influence broader language trends?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the innovative morphological practices in Nigerian Instagram captions, offering insights into digital language evolution. The research contributes to academic discussions on morphology and digital communication while providing practical implications for understanding contemporary linguistic trends in Nigeria (Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on morphological innovation as observed in Instagram captions within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to textual analysis on this platform and does not extend to other forms of social media or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Morphological Innovation: The process of creating new word forms or altering existing ones.
  • Instagram Caption: Text accompanying an image or video on Instagram.
  • Word Formation: Linguistic processes that generate new words, including compounding and affixation.
